Childrens Book about Maltese

Ariels Adventures
by Jocelyn Jackson

Here’s a childrens book about Maltese. And Jocelyn Jackson, author of Ariels Adventures is interviewed here about her new childrens book.

The book is a true story about Jocelyn’s Maltese dog Ariel, and adventures she had during her short life.

Maltese dogs are close cousins of Bichon Frises, and they share many of the same wonderful characteristics! Ariel was a special Maltese.

Told from Ariel’s point of view, the book shares the adventures of this cute little white dog—from her perspective.

Ariel’s Adventures was written for children, ages 4-8.

Author Interview
Jocelyn Jackson

Jocelyn Jackson is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. She is an avid dog lover, currently living in Virginia.

In addition to writing (author of over 50 books), Jocelyn has been actively involved with children and seniors—substitute teaching, working with kids in summer theater camps and performing (singing and lectures) for a number of senior facilities.

Jocelyn has been singing and acting all over the world since the age of two—professionally by the age of twenty. You may have seen her on a TV show in in a movie…

Linda: Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us, Jocelyn. Tell us about your dog Ariel, about whom you wrote this childrens book about Maltese. What was special about Ariel?

Jocelyn: I adopted Ariel when she was 9 weeks old. From day one we had a bond (she climbed into my lap to let me know I was taking her home).

Ariel was smarter than my husband and me combined. I could teach her anything & she'd have it down in 2-3 tries. She even learned to walk the runway, wearing outfits & posing in the middle then continuing down the aisle, turning around & doing it again.

Linda: How did you come to write a childrens book about Maltese--about Ariel? What gave you the idea to write a book for children?

Jocelyn: - Ariel was actually sitting in my lap when I wrote the story 2 years ago. I was going to publish it then, but decided not to. Six months after she passed away, I was inspired to honor my little girl's memory. I decided to write the book for children & change my experience with her, into a 5 year old's experiences with her. Quite honestly, I didn't think anyone would care about a 40 year old bringing home a puppy.

Linda: You mentioned that Ariel passed away. What happened to Ariel?

Jocelyn: Ariel became very ill at 7. She was diagnosed with chronic hepatitis. We were able to manage the disease. However, the last 6 months of her life, Ariel had intestinal issues and then cancer. She underwent surgery to remove the cancer, and it was a success. Even so, she passed away two weeks later, from further liver and intestinal complications, on October 27th at 2:03 pm.

Linda: What are the characteristics of the Maltese breed? How are they part of your story?

Jocelyn: Malteses are usually very friendly, and they love to be around people and other animals.

Ariel was rather shy. She LOVED cats (Her brother was a ginger tabby and is featured in the book), but she wasn't much of a dog lover. She wasn't too crazy about seeing the old folk at the assisted living facility either, and she was kind of antsy around kids. Ariel was simply Daddy's Little Girl.

Despite all of these things EVERYONE who saw Ariel immediately fell in love with her and wanted to hold her and be around her. You can see Ariel's shyness in the book and her relationship with all the characters, including Simba & Daddy.

Linda: Is this your first children’s book? If not, can you tell us about the others?

Jocelyn: This is my first children's book, however, it's not my first book. I have written 50 books which I have chosen not to publish at this time. I have also written several plays and musicals.

Linda: As a mother and former teacher, I’m always thinking of education. What are the lessons to be learned in Ariel’s Adventures?

Jocelyn: Ariel's Adventures, The Series: Ariel's New Home is meant as a leisure book—a book to be read for fun. The series is meant to start with Ariel being adopted (The first lesson for children who themselves have been adopted, and are welcomed into new homes). Ariel shares her many adventures, and at the end of the series, Ariel gets sick, goes to the doctor and passes away. The last book in the series will teach children how to grieve over the loss of a pet.

Linda: What is it about the book that children like the most?

Jocelyn: I wrote the book to share my special little girl with the world. As I mentioned, whenever she was around, which was most of the time, everyone instantly came up to her. She was like a magnet. Everyone loved her and wanted to be around her, young and old alike. I like the fact that I get to share my Baby Ariel with more than the residents of Virginia, Maryland & DC, but the entire world who will get to know her and love her as I did.

Linda: Can you give us a teaser about the book’s content?

Jocelyn Ariel’s Adventures, The Series: Ariel’s New Home, a book is based on real life characters, begins with Ariel finding a new home and meeting her new family. During the series, she shares many special holidays, some rare firsts that very few puppies experience, and some other fun and incredible adventures. You don’t want to miss this wonderful and exciting series, each a childrens book about Maltese, that is a must have for any pet lover’s collection.

Linda: Thank you for sharing your story with us, Jocelyn. We appreciate your taking the time to do so.
