Want to learn about Bichon Frise?

The Bichon Frise is a delightful and very unique little dog who has many characteristics that make him stand out from other breeds.

Many people fall in love with Bichons when they get to know one.

But, before you make a final decision, it's important that you learn about Bichons, as there are some reasons that they might not work for you.

Bichon Frise Appearance

The ideal height of a Bichon Frise should be between 9 1/2 and 11 1/2 inches at the shoulder.

There is not a specific breed weight, but most Bichon Frises range between 7 and 25 pounds with the average weight being around 15 to 16 pounds.

Currently our female Bichon, Emily, weighs 14 pounds. Our adult male, Buddy, weighs 22 pounds. Our newest Bichon Frise puppy, Beau, weighs 9.2 pounds.

Bichons are Hypoallergenic Dogs

Bichon Frises are small fluffy dogs and are a non shedding dog. Also known for being hypoallergenic dogs, they are great for people who have problems with allergies and even asthma.

Speaking from personal experience, my wife Tanya, has severe asthma. Before becoming Bichon owners we tried raising several different breeds of dogs but found that pet fur was a major trigger to her asthma attacks. Then we learned about the Bichon Frise and their hypoallergenic coat--which is actually hair and not fur. For the past 7 years, living with Bichons, she has not had any problems related to this allergic trigger.

Bichons have what is called a double coat.

The undercoat is very soft and closely compacted while the outercoat is a little rougher and curly. The combination of these two coats provide a unique, luxurious and silky texture.

The Bichon sheds little to no hair especially when groomed frequently. Bichon Frises do not have fur as most dog breeds do. They actually have hair.

The Bichon Personality

Next, let's find out about Bichon Frise temperament.

These small white dogs will show you exactly how they are feeling or what kind of a mood they are in by their facial expressions and body language.

They carry their tail plumed high over their back when they are happy and will drag it on the ground when they are sad.

They are very sensitive-so be careful about the tone of voice you use when speaking to them.

A Bichon's feelings can be hurt in an instant; fortunately, he can just as quickly return to his happy mood.

Another wonderful quality about Bichon Frises is that they are very gentle; they probably wouldn't even hurt a fly.

But they can be courageous and are good little watchdogs. They will alert you when someone rings the doorbell or if they see another dog or cat walking down the street.

Bichons are Lovers!

Finally, let's not forget about Bichon Frise affectionate nature.

These dogs are lovers.

Bichons love to give kisses to their owners or even to strangers, for that matter. They enjoy snuggling up next to you in bed or jumping up into your lap while you watch your favorite TV show.

Our oldest Bichon, Buddy, even has a foot fettish. He loves licking our feet every chance he gets. Sorry Buddy-we gave your secret away. :)

As you can see, the Bichon Frise is a special little dog with many loving characteristics.
