Canine Flu Outbreak

Veterinarians are warning dog owners that canine flu has become an issue in the Northeast, particularly in the New York City area.

First discovered in Florida in 2005, the dog flu is very contagious and causes coughing, a runny nose and a fever. It is not fatal.

Because the flu is a virus, there is no treatment for it, but veterinarians often give a dog antibiotics to cure any secondary infections that may have developed.

Dogs in shelters and kennels and dogs that come into contact with other dogs are most likely to get the flu. People cannot get it from their dogs.
